Massive changes in new technologies are disrupting law enforcement and criminal justice everywhere. There are tremendous advantages to be gained from real-time crime mapping and predictive policing, but also enormous risks in relation to discriminatory police practices and data privacy. Robert Muggah, Emile Badran, and Katherine Aguirre discuss these issues in a new Igarapé Institute publication – Crime Prediction for More Agile Policing in Cities. 

Igarapé Institute took active part in the annual climate summit – COP25 – in Madrid this December. Adriana Abdenur and Giovanna Kuele released a new report – Climate and Security in Latin America and the Caribbean: From Evidence to Political Solutions – available in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The team also released several opinion articles, including in O Globo, and full-page interviews in O Globo and Estadão. 

Everyday thousands of refugees cross international borders, fleeing from war, violence and uncertainty. In Brazil, at least 100,000 new refugees have arrived since 2017, many from Venezuela. A major challenge is accessing basic services. To meet this challenge, Igarapé Institute launched OKA, a free mobile app. It connects new arrivals – refugees, asylum seekers and also internal displaced and vulnerable communities with critical geo-located information on shelter, food sources, education, transportation and health services. 

Brazil has the third largest prison population in the world. Yet there is comparatively little understanding of the role of women and girls in Brazil’s penal system. According to research conducted by the Igarapé Institute, there were 37,828 women in prisons in 2017, a sevenfold increase on 2000. In order to draw attention to their particular challenges, Igarapé Institute launched the Sócios da Liberdade (Freedom Partners) campaign in October. 

At least 1.2 million women suffered from violent victimization in Brazil between 2010 and 2017. In order to reveal the sheer scope and scale of violence against women and help strengthen data collection and public policy responses, Igarapé Institute launched a new data visualization platform.
