Igarapé at the COPs: From Madrid to Belém

Igarapé has maintained a steady presence at the annual climate conferences since 2019, when it made its debut at COP25 in Madrid with the launch of a pioneering report on climate and security in Latin America and the Caribbean. In 2021, at COP26 in Glasgow, we consolidated our work by linking climate change and insecurity through launches, events, and direct engagement with global leaders.

Since then, we have participated in COP27, COP28, and COP29, expanding the climate and nature agenda, driving solutions to confront environmental crime, promoting a just transition, and advocating for the Amazon as the center of the global climate struggle. Our initiatives have included innovative studies, monitoring technologies, high-level debates, and building bridges between governments, civil society, and the private sector.

Now, Brazil is preparing to host COP30 in Belém, Pará. For Igarapé, this will be an opportunity to turn the symbolism of the Amazon into concrete action: tackling environmental crime, strengthening multilateralism, scaling up nature finance, and presenting solutions that bring together bioeconomy, governance, and international cooperation. Above all, we aim to strengthen the role of nature-based solutions in addressing the global climate crisis. We will be there once again, to ensure that COP30 becomes a milestone for change.
